The District 205 Parent Academy team is committed to providing parents with the cutting edge information they need to support their children in an increasingly competitive global environment.

 

2010 Proposed Parent Academy Workshops
 
The Parent Academy team will be offering a compelling series of educational workshops on issues influencing our youth.  The dates of the workshops will be announced during Parent Advisories at each building.

 

Potential  workshop titles will include the following: 

 

·Families building better readers and promoting enhanced Literacy Skills

·Computing Mathematical Success: How to help your child reach his/her full potential in math class.

·Food for Thought: How to choose food to properly fuel your brain and body.

·Parenting for HIV/STD prevention

·Parenting for Drug Prevention

·Violence Free living for teens

·English for Speakers of other languages

·Helping your child navigate the college application process

·Internet safety for families

·Making the most of the money you earn

·Build your child’s cultural literacy/Appreciating the arts.

·How to get the most out of the Museum’s of Chicago.

·The Journey “Making the most of Freshmen Year”

·Preparing your Child for the World of Work

·Reducing Test Stress - Providing a positive testing atmosphere in the home.

·International Travel-expand your child’s cultural literacy

·Resume’ writing and job interview success
 

 
Quantum Learning Workshops
 
 
Patti Brucki and Rachael Poorman will be offereing a number of Quantum Learning workshops for parents. QL includes an instructional design, delivery method, and effective strategies for presentation, facilitation, learning and life skills. QL also sets high standards for content cognition. This comprehensive model is effective across all ability levels of students and is applicable to all subjects and grades. QL trains teachers in effective facilitation that supports learning and classroom management.

 

Some of the topics that they will cover include:

·         Building positive relationships and communication skills

·         The secrets of the teenage brain

·         How to boost your memory

·         Motivating your teen to succeed

·         Study Skills

 

 

*It is important to note that this is not a complete list, but will expand after meeting with the representatives from the buildings and a needs assessment has been given to parents. I am also thinking about creating a one day PARENT UNIVERSITY…a daylong event for parents with a number of workshops and seminars offered…sort of like attending a conference.
