Senior Project

Dear Parents/Guardians of Thornton Township High School District 205,

This year, freshmen will begin the process that will lead them to the completion of the Senior Project.  Using the skills that your son/daughter has acquired throughout twelve years of education, he/she will choose a career topic, research it completely, write an annotated bibliography, create a product and portfolio, and conduct an oral presentation of the product and portfolio to a panel of evaluators.  The Senior Project is a required, independent project with instructional support.

The Thornton Township High School District 205 Board of Education requires successful completion of the Senior Project for graduation.

The process will begin with an orientation for the freshmen to the Senior Project.  During the orientation, the students will receive an overview of the Senior Project and will have an opportunity to ask questions about what will be expected of them during their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years of high school with regard to the project.

As Freshmen, students will:

  • Sign a contract

Ensure student‘s and parent’s understanding of the components and procedures of the Senior Project
Commits the student and parents to the specifications of the Senior Project in order to graduate

  • Begin their portfolio in a binder or electronically

  • Begin researching possible careers:  “Getting Started”

As Sophomores, students will:

  • Turn in a general career essay by the due date

  • Develop and deliver a speech on a specific career in Speech I
Store this speech on the H: drive at school
            Turn
in a hard copy of the outline to their speech teacher

As Juniors, students will:

  • Submit an official letter of intent

  • Continue to develop a portfolio of work

  • Complete an annotated bibliography

  • Select and contact a Mentor to guide the student
Complete mentor application with approval from advisor and parent/guardian
Complete a minimum of 10 hours of interaction with the Mentor

Submit mentor log signed by their Mentor and parent/guardian

As Seniors, students will:

  • Submit mentor evaluation form completed by their Mentor

  • Create a tangible product (presentation and display) demonstrating the application of knowledge gained through research and their mentoring experience
Give an oral presentation of the Senior Project and display a product to a panel of evaluators

The Senior Project is a step-by-step process which requires the student to be well organized.  An objective of the Senior Project is to teach students to manage their time; due dates are given at the beginning of the school year, and students are expected to meet them.

An absence on the day of a deadline does not serve as an excuse for not turning in a particular part of the required work on time.  Students are expected to meet all deadlines.

All requirements, including presentations, must be completed by the deadline set prior to graduation.
