Let your love for Gaming take you to college.  DeVry University is offering an “Introduction to Game and Simulation Development” December 26- January 4.  The cost is $150.00.  You will receive 3 credit hours.  Build on your passion for gaming, technology and programming.   

South Suburban College is offering one FREE class at the 100 level. 

Seniors:

After January 1, 2008 you may apply for the FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid.   To get a jumpstart, remember, you and your parent should apply for a PIN number now.  Visit: www.fafsa.ed.gov.  (If you have to pay to apply, you are on the wrong website.)

Juniors:

The PSAE is coming.  Have you registered for the Princeton Review?  It is imperative that you prepare for the PSAE now.  See Mrs. Malospy in C206 for more information.

SCHOLARSHIPS: 

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority- Senior must have at least a 2.5 GPA and community service.  Deadline:  February 1.

Sam Walton Community (Wal-Mart)- $1000. Senior, visit www.walmartfoundation.org. Deadline: January 14.   

ABBY- $1,000. Female senior with 3.0 GPA or higher. Deadline: March 1.

Mckelvey Foundation-up to $40,000. Senior who own and operate a business for at least one year.  Deadline:  January 15.

The Will- South Cook Soil & Water Conservation- Write an essay on “How your

Field of study will benefit Conservation.”  Deadline: April 1

Children Of Veterans Tuition Waiver – Full four-year in-state tuition.  Deadline: May 1.

Shimer College MICHEL De Montaigne Scholarship- Full tuition.  Complete an application for admission by January 15.

 

CAREER NEWS

Rapidly growing careers that require two years or less of training.

Major: Computer Science

Average Pay $60,000

Game design, networking and communications are all part of the computer science realm.  Go for a broad computer science degree, or specialize in something like micro-computing or Web development.   “Many students go into Help desks, working on installing and configuring wireless networks, hooking computers up to a network.

Major: Medical assistant

Average pay $24,610

Medical assistants escort patients from the waiting room and perform check-in procedures prior to the doctor’s arrival.   Expect to take courses in biology, medical law, psychology, communication, office management practices and chemistry.  As one of the fastest growing industries, job opportunities are plentiful.

Major: Logistics technologies (warehousing)

Average pay:  $29,016

Logistics includes all actions involved in the movement of materials from manufacturer to consumer.  Included is warehousing, trucking, and management.

Major: Culinary Arts

Average pay: $30,680
