University of Illinois
Engineering Biodiesel
Mr. Sievers
chaperoned nine students, Kierra Barnett, Doug Bright, Chris Griffin, Larry
Doss, Chad Collins, Robert Cooper, Tapiwa Saliji, Britney Tucker, and Kaneesha
Joe to the University of Illinois on March 25th, over spring break to visit the
biodiesel facilities. The students went to the Waste Management Resource
research lab, meet with U of I students and a WMRC employee, and gained a great
deal of knowledge and saw a working “appleseed” biodiesel processor. Biodiesel
is cheap, clean fuel made from used cooking oil. Two students, Doug Bright and
Kierra Barnett helped edit Biodiesel grants written by Mr. Sievers. Mr. Sievers
won two grants, one from Toyota and one from Amoco to make biodiesel at
Thornridge and he has been in touch with and he has established a partnership
with students at the University of Illinois who are working on the biodiesel
project there. Next year, students and Mr. Sievers plan to build and operate a
biodiesel processor as part of the biodiesel grant projects. Further trips to
the University of Illinois and planned to continue the cooperative biodiesel
program between Thornridge and the University of Illinois.
