Conical Pendulum Lab in Physics
Students used small propeller driven planes hung
from a ceiling by a nylon cord. The planes traveled in a
circle at constant speed and the string swept out the shape of a cone.
Students measured the period of the moving plane and the length of the
string. Then using
equations for centripetal acceleration, students were able to calculate
the angle at which the planes traveled at. Students were also able
to calculate the velocity of the plane and the tension in the string.
