On 11/17 Mr. Sievers accompanied 5 students from Thornridge High School: Brittany Tucker, Kierra Barnett, Marlon Taylor, Tapiwa Saliji, and Eduardo Robinson to FINISH the ongoing “deck” project at the house in Harvey.  The students had to first cutout openings in the deck and add two 4x4 posts for the handrails and safety rails.   The students, hauled all the material to the job site, drilled the holes for the carriage bolts that hold the 4x4’s, athey attached and cut to length the 4x4’s, they helped cut the openings, cut to length the horizontal supports, they attached with screws all the supports and balusters.   School was in session as the students learned all about the math, layout, and cutting “stringers”, risers, and treads to construct stairs for a deck.  They gained experience using a compound miter saw, jigsaw, a framing square, using a tape measure, using drills to drive deck screws, attaching carriage bolts, and general handrail construction.  The students did an excellent job of working and cleaning up.  The work was completed in approximately 4 hours and afterwards Mr. Sievers treated the students to lunch at Hog Wild.  The next projects will focus on the house interior.
