Habitat for Humanity 11-3-07
On 11/03 Mr. Sievers accompanied 7 students from Thornridge High School: Doug Bright, Jerome Knight, Kierra Barnett, Marlon Taylor, Tapiwa Saliji, Darius Bedford, and Keith Watt to continue the ongoing “deck” project at the house in Harvey. The students had to first add several screws to the joist hangers on the existing frame and then haul all the lumber for the deck. School was in session as the students learned all about the math, layout, and cutting “stringers”, risers, and treads to construct stairs for a deck. They gained experience using a circular saw, jigsaw, a framing square, using a tape measure, using drills to drive deck screws, attaching carriage bolts, and general stair construction. The students did an excellent job of working and cleaning up. The work was completed in approximately 6 hours and fun was had by all. Also, as you can see by the pictures, that the new stairs could hold the entire crew. The next task will be to build the safety rail around the deck.
