Celebrate African-American History

We owe the celebration of African-American History Month, and more importantly, the study of African-American history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson.  Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty.  He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. form Harvard.  The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the African-American population--and when African-Americans did figure into the picture, it was generally reflected in inferior social positions.  In 1926, Woodson organized the first Negro History Week, to focus attention on previously neglected aspects of the African-American experience in the United States.  The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, as well as the anniversary of the founding of the NAACP.  In 1972, Negro History Week as renamed Black History Week and the observance was extended to become Black History Month in 1976.

Library Usage Tips for Teachers

1.    Plan ahead.

  • Sign-up early for library reading rooms.
  • Bear in mind that it is easier to cancel than to sign -up at the last minute if there is a change in plans.

2.    In order for classes to be given the opportunity to use the library, wait until your class  arrives at the library portion of your assignment before bringing them to the library.

3.    Have a librarian review library skills (EBSCOHost, Reader's Guide, OPAC, Web Searching etc.) with your class(es) so that each student will be able to locate materials independently.

4.    Let the library staff assist you by setting aside any special materials your classes may need for an assignment.  To assure their availability, you may request that these materials be put on overnight reserve.  Please allow ample time to arrange for this service.

Book Requests

The library staff continues to welcome suggestions for new materials for both the fiction and nonfiction collection..  The library will be able to support  your curriculum if we know what books you want to use in your class.  We will not be able to order classroom sets of books, this would have to come through your departments.
