Thornton Township High School / Stagg High School Exchange

As an ongoing project to break down racial and cultural barriers, Thornton teachers Mr. Brett Fickes and Mr. Mike Sinde in cooperation with Stagg teachers Ms. Anne Raggio and Mr. Paul Garbrecht planned a student exchange with students from Stagg High School.  It has been over 50 years since the historic Brown vs. Board of Education case helped lead the way for the desegregation of schools.  However, even today we still see schools today that are in our very own communities that are very segregated – in particular the south suburbs of Chicago.  Stagg and Thornton are separated by less than 15 miles and yet their student bodies are completely different.  What are some of the issues that cause this?  How does this affect the education that the students receive?  Are the resources available at the schools similar or do they differ vastly?  These are just some of the issues in which we would like to explore.  On Tuesday February 15, 2006, Thornton hosted approximately 25 students from Stagg.  These students “shadowed” a Thornton student for the day by attending his or her classes, lunch, etc.  On Wednesday February 16, 2006, these same students traveled to Stagg and “shadowed” a student and see what it is like to attend a different school.  It is our goal to discuss some of the barriers that still exist today over 50 years after that historic case. The students and teachers hope to continue this discussion into the future. Currently, a committee of students is producing a documentary about the experience.  Stay tuned for further updates.
