Mr. Don Holmes
My name is Don C. Holmes and in addition to being a proud Principal at Thornwood High School, I am also the proud father of 3 children; 2 boys ages 18 and 16, and one girl age 11. I have been married to their mother and my high school sweetheart for over 17 years. We are both graduates of Thornwood High School and have as much pride for the school, which my sons now attends, as we had when we graduated in 1994. Life with my family especially my daughter who has down’s syndrome, has demonstrated to me our children’s need for extra love, attention, nurturing, patience, research, differentiation, discipline and upbringing regardless of their abilities, while maintaining high expectations for accomplishing life’s personalized benchmarks and goals. As an assistant principal, dean, former professional football player, varsity high school football defensive coordinator, youth service specialists, lyricist and record label owner, Rose Bowl defensive statistic leader, Big 10 football champion, 4 year letterman, full 4 year athletic scholarship recipient at Northwestern University, 4 year high school letterman, team captain, All State and All Area LB (TWHS), and state shot-put and discuss finalist, I know firsthand the importance of education, inclusion, and extracurricular activities to the lives of our children.
After finding out that my back was broken in 1999, and hearing my doctor say: "it's probably in your best interest to stop playing football.” I gathered myself, took a deep breath, and fell back on my educational background. I come from a long line of educators ranging from retired High School Principals, to 35 year master teachers; who in addition to my professional experience, helped to provide the guidance and support I needed to procure my Masters in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Shortly after, I passed the state’s Principal exam and procured my Type 75 supervisory certificate. These credentials along with my BS in Communication studies from Northwestern University, and my life and professional experiences have formed the foundation which I believe has enabled me to effectively communicate with, and help provide practical direction for our youth during these changing times. I currently am pursuing my EdD in Educational Leadership through Concordia University Chicago. I expect to graduate and procure my Superintendent endorsement by December of 2016.
To date I am a dissertation away from procuring my EdD in Educational leadership with superintendent endorsement through Concordia University. I have a combined 11 years of administrative experience serving as an assistant principal, dean, and teacher evaluator, including 4 years using the Charlotte Danielson evaluation model. I’ve led a number of committees, including but not limited to: Professional Development, Feeder Retention, School Transformation, Response To Intervention, School Improvement , Safe Buildings and Grounds, Discipline Assessment, Student Handbook, Deans', and Professional Council just to name a few. Additionally, I’ve organized and presented using the most current technology at dozens of professional development and “Best Practices" workshops to our staff during School Improvement, and other scheduled days. I stay abreast of cutting edge professional development opportunities attending conferences with issues ranging from Race and ethnicity, and classroom management, to Alternatives to Suspension and flipped classrooms.
I'm honored to be serving as Principal at my alma mata. If I've learned anything in life, it is to stay unfinished. As a result of that mindset, I remain a lifetime learner and educator. Because our sons and daughters will share successes and failures in the same future, I will continue to: promote a positive school environment, respond to all warnings of danger or failure, and encourage academic, social, athletic, and other extracurricular successes. My own children have been given the foundation to succeed in life. When parents entrust their children to me, that same expectation becomes a guiding principle. I look forward to the opportunity of helping students at my alma-mata reach their wildest dreams while becoming productive and responsible citizens in our society.

Degrees and Certifications:
Mr. Thomas Walsh
Greetings parents, students and community members, from Thunderbird Territory,
My name is Tom Walsh and it is with great pleasure and pride that I serve as an Assistant Principal at Thornwood High School. I have spent my entire career in education at Thornwood High School. During my time as a teacher, I instructed health education, physical education, driver education, and coached boy’s and girl’s tennis, prior to becoming an assistant principal in 2012.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education in 2005 from Illinois State University, and later earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Governor’s State University.
I believe our job as educators extends well beyond educating students on the lessons that are taught in the classroom. We all must work together to ensure that students receive the social, emotional, and physical support that they need to be prepared to engage themselves at the highest academic level possible.
As a graduate of Thornwood High School in the class of 2000 I am passionate about Thornwood High School, and what it means to be a Thunderbird. It is truly exciting to see so many students who continue to personify our motto of excellence, respect, and pride. I enjoy serving the community members of Thornwood High School and look forward to being able to continue working in my role as assistant principal for many years to come.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns by using the information listed above.
Make it a great day!
