Programs, Services, and Activities

Instruction and related services

Support may include co-teaching, resource support, specialized instruction, or a specialized classroom. In co-teaching, general and special education teachers work together. The IEP team determines the instruction and setting that meet the student’s needs.

Related services help a student benefit from special education. Depending on individual needs, these may include speech-language services, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, or other supports. The IEP identifies the services a student will receive.

Behavior and communication supports

When behavior affects learning, a Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) can help identify why it occurs. A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) describes strategies to teach skills and support positive behavior. Assistive technology may help students communicate, learn, or participate independently.

Therapeutic and out-of-district placements

Some students need a specialized program outside their home school. The IEP team, including the family, reviews the student’s needs and determines the appropriate placement. District 205 works with the receiving program to coordinate services, meetings, progress updates, and transportation when required.

For questions about an out-of-district placement, contact Erica Perry, Student Services Coordinator, through the PPS office. Families may also contact their student’s case manager about current services and progress.

Extended School Year (ESY)

Extended School Year (ESY) services provide special education support beyond the regular school calendar when needed. The IEP team reviews each student’s needs to determine eligibility. ESY differs from general summer school, credit recovery, and summer enrichment.

If your student qualifies, the IEP identifies the services. Families receive information about dates, location, and transportation when applicable. Ask your case manager how the team will consider your student’s needs.

Special Olympics and inclusive activities

Students may have opportunities to participate in Special Olympics and other inclusive activities. Contact your school for current offerings, registration, medical forms, participation requirements, practice schedules, and transportation information.
