Section 504 and English Learner Services
Section 504 supports
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that protects students with disabilities from discrimination. An eligible student may need accommodations or services to access learning and school activities. A student may qualify under Section 504 even if they do not qualify for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
If you believe your student needs support because of a disability or health condition, contact the school to request a Section 504 evaluation. Staff will explain the review process, the information needed, and your rights.

English learner services
English learner services help eligible students develop English while learning academic content. Depending on the student’s needs and program requirements, support may include bilingual instruction, English language development, and other classroom supports. Students’ English language growth is assessed each year.
Contact your school for questions about identification, language services, assessment results, or your student’s progress. Staff can explain the program and how families can support learning at home.
English learners with disabilities
A student may receive both English learner services and special education services. The team considers language development, cultural background, communication, and disability-related needs when planning assessments and services. Learning English alone does not mean a student has a disability.
Interpretation and translation
You may request an interpreter for a meeting or help understanding school information. Contact your school or PPS office and share your preferred language. Language assistance helps you ask questions, understand information, and take part in decisions about your student.
