Transportation and Home/Hospital Instruction
Special education transportation
Some students need specialized transportation to attend school and receive services. The IEP team determines the student’s transportation needs and documents required supports in the IEP.
In-district transportation
Your student’s school handles in-district special education transportation. Contact the school’s Special Programs office about a new route, address change, pickup or drop-off concern, or other routing question. Provide your student’s name, school, and a phone number where staff can reach you.

When a medical condition prevents school attendance
Home or hospital instruction may be available when a physical or mental health condition prevents a student from attending school for an extended period or causes qualifying ongoing absences. A student does not need an existing IEP or Section 504 plan to be considered.
Contact your school nurse or Special Programs office as soon as you know services may be needed. Ask your medical provider to complete the medical certification form and return it promptly to the school. Send the completed form to the school district, not to ISBE.
The school reviews the documentation and explains eligibility and service arrangements. If the student has an IEP or Section 504 plan, the team considers needed changes and plans for a return to school when medically appropriate.
