Coronavirus Updates

March 26, 2020

Today, the District was notified that an employee of its custodial services vendor has tested positive for COVID-19 (the Coronavirus).  This individual recently provided custodial services at Thornridge High School but has not been on the premises since March 18, 2020.  Even though the District’s schools have been closed pursuant to the State-wide mandatory school closure, as ordered by Governor Pritzker, since March 17th and this individual’s recent contact with others in the school community appears to have been limited, Thornridge’s kitchen has been used to provide free breakfast and lunch meals to families during the time that schools have been closed.  Accordingly, so as to ensure Thornridge, and its kitchen area specifically, are able to undergo a deep cleaning process and appropriate staffing and safety arrangements can be made, the meals program will be temporarily suspended until the morning of Tuesday, March 31st.

To our IB Students and Families,

The International Baccalaureate Organization has announced that the May examinations for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme will not be held this year due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

As an organization, it is critical for the IB to ensure that the options it provides its global community of IB World Schools are based on compassion and fairness for the difficult circumstances that its students and educators are experiencing.  As a result, based on considerable advice from stakeholders across the globe, including schools, students, universities and official bodies, the IB has determined what it believes to be the most responsible and ethical way forward.

The May 2020 examinations as scheduled between 30 April and 22 May for Diploma Programme and Career-related Programme candidates will no longer be held.

Depending on what they registered for, the student will be awarded a Diploma or a Course Certificate which reflects their standard of work.  This is based on student's coursework and the established assessment expertise, rigor and quality control already built into the programmes.

We know parents and student will have many questions.  The IB will share full details and FAQs with us and on their website by 27 March 2020.

For any other questions, please contact Thornwood’s IB Coordinator, Cerelia Hampton at

Thank you and stay well.

Greetings Thunderbird Families,

Today, the Illinois Department of Public Health notified the District that on March 4, 2020 a Thornwood High School student's parent, who has since tested positive for COVID-19 (the Coronavirus), visited the school for a meeting with staff.  We are now in the process of gathering all information about whom this parent came into contact with while in the building and any other actions this parent took that day at Thornwood.  Out of an abundance of caution, Thornwood High School will now be closed on Monday, March 16, 2020 in addition to Tuesday March 17th- March 30th.  At this time, and until further notice the building is off limits and will be closed to all staff members and students as deep cleaning and disinfecting efforts are taking place.  We will do our best to create a plan to get online and hard copy work assignments to our students.  Please continue to demonstrate resolve during these challenging times.  I thank you all for your continued dedication and support of our students and community!  Take care of yourselves and your families, and we will be in touch periodically with updates to this scenario via: School reach, email, and school website links.
